Traditions. School | Weapons in “Bushido” School

At Oyama’s dojo training with weapons was episodical, but the adherent of Budo karate himself insisted that “a person who cannot resist to an armed assault without arms could not be considered as karate master”. Obviously the effectiveness of self-defense is basically depends on practical knowledge of technical-tactical potentialities of opponent’s weapon. On Shihan A.Tanyushkin’s and Shihan V.Fomin’s initiative nowadays in the IFK some courses based on Kyokushin karate (particularly on the kata basis), where different kinds of traditional and modern cold weapons are learning, are purposefully applying in life Many of them are learning in “Bushido” school. First of all they are key kinds of weapons – Knife and Stick. Mastering them opens wide possibilities for effective learning different derivative kinds of weapons so as analogous improvised objects and means. One of the typical examples – training with the modified javara on the basis of knife techniques. Training with Bo (pole), Sai, partly with Sword (the last one is limited to cutting practice and corresponding preparatory exercises). Training with weapons on the basis of karate, while using traditional methods of teaching (particularly performing Kyokushin katas with different weapons), is one of the distinctive features of the modern IFK Kyokushin School. At the same time the system of such courses in the general Budo karate complex is open and is always developing. система соответствующих факультативов в общем комплексе Будо-каратэ является открытой и постоянно развивается. In “Bushido” School not only methods of training with particular weapons, but also methods of fighting with one weapon against the other and techniques of self-defense without arms against an armed assault (taking off opponent’s weapon) are systematized

Knife

Knife – the most ancient instrument of human survival, which virtually is “the father” of all cold weapons. In “Bushido” School Knife (together with Stick) is one of two key kinds of weapons. “School of Knife” developed by Shihan Victor Fomin, envelopes complex of preparatory and warming up exercises, specialized forms of kihon and kata, Kyokushin katas performed with knife, attacking combinations, such kumite varieties as “Knife against Knife”, “Stick against Knife” “Knife against Stick”, “Knife against Bo”, also self-defense techniques against threatening with knife put to the body and self-defense without arms against knife attacks

Stick

Stick– also the most ancient instrument of human survival, as Knife. Virtually Stick is “the mother” of all cold weapons. In “Bushido” School Stick (together with Knife) is one of two key kinds of weapons. “School of Knife” developed by Shihan Victor Fomin, envelopes complex of preparatory and warming up exercises, specialized forms of kihon, attacking combinations, such kumite varieties as “Stick against Knife” “Knife against Stick”, “Stick against Bo”, also self-defense techniques without arms against an opponent armed with a stick

Bo

Bo – a traditional kind of weapon, which is studied separately in many karate schools. When M.Oyama was still alive the simplest Bo-kata was published. In the IFK School some complexes of preparatory and warming up exercises with Bo, adapted Kyokushin katas and training forms of kumite were initially developed by Shihan Dave Lund Regan (Great Britain), then they were supplemented by Shihan A.Tanyushkin and Shihan V.Fomin. In “Bushido” School Bo is not only a tribute to Budo karate tradition, but one of the most important instruments of teaching and educating masters. Corresponding part of training includes self-defense techniques without arms against an opponent armed with a pole

Sai

Sai – one of traditional kind of weapon, which is introduced in many karate schools. At M.Oyama’s dojo Sai was not a part of training syllabus, but S.Arneil got permission to study Sai with the other master. In the IFK School Hanshi S.Arneil ханси С.Арнейл has charged to develop a corresponding course to Shihan A.Tanyushkin. In “Bushido” School training with Sai is a tribute to tradition and it is put into practice in accordance with Shihan A.Tanyushkin’s syllabus.ng Nowadays this training is limited basically to learning Kyokushin katas with Sai

Javara

Javara, being a short stick with rounded butt-ends Явара, in master’s hands becomes deadly weapon of self-defense. Tradi-tional training with javara (initially on the basis of ju-jitsu) is concentrated on hitting bones and muscles, pressing vital points (including ones, combined with catching and grabbing). It is ought to remember, that many strikes to vital points of the head and face are potentially lethal. In “Bushido” School operating modified javara (an octahedral stick with butt-ends symmetrically cut at the angle of 45° from the opposite sides) is practiced - mainly on the basis of karate and knife techniques.

Sword

Sword is traditionally the most respectful and independent martial art. Sword is a sacred symbol of the warrior’s spirit and the warrior’s Way. Nowadays in “Bushido” School introducing Sword is limited to performing preparatory exercises (including the simplest katas of Taikyoku type) and to testing practical knowledge of the weapon by means of cutting different objects (ta-meshigiri)
